Want to buy a 2017 DeLorean DMC-12? Now's your chance
You'll have to act real fast, though, since only a few hundred examples will be built.
Have you always wanted a DeLorean DMC-12 but are leery of buying into 30 years of wear and tear? Well, person-I-just-made-up, you're in luck, because starting now, you can order a brand new one.
The resurrected DeLorean Motor Company, transplanted from Northern Ireland to Texas and under new management, has once again opened up its order books. The vehicles will be constructed using original parts, but since those parts aren't exactly falling out of the world's crevices, only around 300 brand new DMC-12s will be built. The company expects to construct about one car per month in its new facility, but high demand could change that.
We can thank the US government for the DMC-12's return. The feds enacted the Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act back in 2015, which allows small automakers to produce a small batch of vehicles without having to submit the cars to the battery of federal regulations and crash tests. Sure, it might crumple into a wad of stainless steel upon collision, but hey, new DeLoreans!
If you've got the scratch, but aren't sure whether or not you really want one, you can still sign up on DeLorean's website. There's no deposit required, and the non-binding contract means you can back out at any time.
DeLorean has not yet announced any specifications, but it's likely that the DMC-12's old 130-horsepower V6 won't be coming back. Our homeskillets at Motor1 estimate power output to be between 300 and 400 hp, with a price hovering between $85,000 and $100,000. Pricing won't be announced for a little while yet.
