Top 5: Stuff we carry in our cars
[MUSIC]
Quick, what's the main thing you put in your car?
This is like Family Feud.
Nope, not gas.
Survey says, stuff.
It fills every cubby and nook of your vehicle.
Just look around.
I'm Brian Cooley with the top five things we need to bring to our cars.
Our ranking data is new.
It's from an R&D study done by Johnson Controls.
They're a huge global maker of car seats and consoles and doors and instrument panels.
They have to know about this cuz they make the storage units where our stuff goes.
Here is what they found.
Number five.
Pens and pencils.
Yeah, I was surprised by this one, too.
But even in this day, smartphones seemingly glued to our hands still don't replace the pen and pencil, and the back of that parking ticket you didn't pay when you've gotta scribble something down fast.
Number four.
Sunglasses.
Now, most cars today have a built-in place up in the roof where you're supposed to put your glasses.
And we love to use them.
This must be a tragedy for the sunglass industry because back in the day before glasses had a pace to live in the car, we just tossed them wherever.
Usually on the seat and that became the biggest graveyard where they got lost or sat on.
Number three, umbrellas.
Here in drought racked California.
I had to go to Wikipedia to look this one up.
Apparently it's a thing you put over your head to keep the rain from hitting it.
Hand, not so novel.
Well I've seen a few cars like Rolls Royce that actually specific brally holders, most of those though just still shove that wet, nasty thing into the car when we get in and then sit on the water it dripped on the seat in the process, ugh.
Johnson, maybe you got an idea there.
Number two is the owners manual.
I'm puzzled by this.
Because most people I know have never read theirs.
I'm surprised they know where it lives.
Maybe they use it as a booster seat.
Before I get you to Number One, some regional oddities.
Only U.S. drivers put a garage door opener in their Top Ten.
The Chinese put emergency hammers for escaping the car in their Top Ten.
I hope that Chinese dude who made the homemade Lamborghini has one.
Of course, I don't think his car has any windows.
And paper maps and CDs, now only make the top 20.
Times are changing.
The number one thing we all feel we've gotta bring to our car and have a place for it to live is, of course, the cell phone.
The one device that can both stream music to our car stereo, provide turn by turn directions, and distract us with text so the previous two functions get ignored.
High tech cars and modern driving.
That's what we do at CNETONCARS.
COM.
I'm Brian Cooley.
Thanks for watching.
