11 deleted tweets from President Trump's first 100 days
The president has tweeted more than 500 times since taking office. Here are the 11 he took back.
So many tweets, so little time.
Saturday will mark 100 days since President Donald Trump took office. Since his inauguration on Jan. 20, he's tweeted more than 510 times, at an average rate of five tweets a day. He's commented on issues ranging from North Korea to ISIS to fake news.
As the president continues to use Twitter to directly reach out to the world -- to the chagrin of most Americans -- he's also shown some tweet regret. ProPublica, a nonprofit newsroom, has partnered with Politwoops to archive deleted tweets from politicians, including Trump.
As president, Trump has deleted 11 tweets from his personal account, @realDonaldTrump, which he chooses to use over @POTUS. Despite warnings from Congress that Trump could be violating the Presidential Records Act by deleting tweets, the commander in chief continues to clean up some up his social media snafus.
First honers
Trump's first deleted tweet as president came just one day after his inauguration. A tweet typo, he wrote that he was "honered" to be president. He deleted the misspelling after it was online for 12 hours, and then tweeted it out again with the correct spelling. But the corrected tweet was also deleted, four hours after it was posted.
On Jan. 28, Trump tweeted out to his 28 million followers that he would be on the Brody File on the Christian Broadcasting Network at 11 p.m. He then deleted the tweet after 20 minutes, when it turned out he had the date wrong.
The same tweet went back up the next day on Jan. 29, when Trump's appearance actually did air.
Not Reilly
On Super Bowl Sunday, the president tweeted out a promotion of his appearance on Fox News' O'Reilly Factor. Trump and the recently ousted Fox News host go way back as milkshake buddies. But the account Trump tweeted at, @oreillyfactor, has been vacant for some time. O'Reilly prefers to tweet from @billoreilly. The errant tweet was deleted after 43 minutes.
A similar tweet went back online a day later.
Spacing out
As controversy continued to swirl in February over the Trump campaign's ties to Russia, President Trump decided to speak out against his "haters." He criticized Barack Obama for making deals with Iran during the 44th president's time in office, arguing the Middle Eastern country was "#1in terror."
Trump deleted the tweet 49 minutes later, realizing that he forgot to put a space between 1 and in.
Congratulations, you playef yourself
After Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited Trump's winter White House in Mar-a-Lago, the president told the world that he had a great time playing golf with the world leader on Twitter. He accidentally typed "playef" instead of "played" in his tweet. (To be fair, the D and F keys are pretty close together.) The tweet from was deleted after 34 minutes and replaced with a tweet with the correct spelling.
The more, the merrier
On Feb. 17, Trump was fed up with how the media had been covering him. It had been three days after his NSA adviser pick Mike Flynn was ousted over his Russian ties, and a day after a wild press conference where he told a Jewish reporter he was the "least anti-Semitic person" and asked a black reporter to set up a meeting with the Congressional Black Caucus. He tweeted out a rallying cry against the "FAKE NEWS media," calling journalists the "enemy of the American people." It was deleted in one minute, but only so he could add more outlets to his list of media enemies, including CBS, which owns CNET.
Just hours before he announced his replacement for NSA adviser, Trump tweeted out that he was meeting with "generals at Mar-a-Lago," and added that it was "very interesting!" He deleted it an hour later and then named Lt. General H.R. McMaster as the new NSA adviser, also via Twitter. He never replaced the tweet.
Hearsay
This one took three tries before Trump got it right. Still battling accusations of Russian ties, the president demanded an investigation against Senator Nancy Pelosi for her ties to Russia, with a photo showing them with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
He tweeted out first "I hear by demand," deleted it after recognizing his typo in two minutes, posted it again this time with "hearby demand," which lasted about 12 minutes before Trump realized it's spelled "hereby." Third time's the charm, huh?
Oh, pal
On March 7, Exxon Mobil said it would spend $20 billion over the next 10 years for investments along the Gulf Coast. Trump commented on the news, touting that the oil company was following the "principals at the core of my agenda." While they sound alike, the president meant to write "principles," which he corrected in a rehashed tweet eight hours later.
In Trump's most recent deleted tweet from April 24, he quoted a post from NASA about astronaut Peggy Whitson breaking the US record for the longest cumulative time spent in space. It was a short, brief tweet with the hashtag "#CongratsPeggy" without any typos. It's unclear why this tweet was deleted, but he did replace it with a 7-minute video of him congratulating the astronaut for her accomplishment.
Here's to the next 1,361 days of deleted tweets, typos and Trump's presidency.
