Big news! Apple is not killing off a port
No, Apple is not replacing lightening connectors.
Apple has a history of dropping ports.
Remember the iPod 30 pin dock connector?
How about having a regular USB port on a laptop?
So, when a report comes out that says Apple will use a new connector that will work with some of it's products, people justifiably freak out.
However, everybody stay calm.
Here's what's really happening.
Nine To Five Mac reported Apple will support something called the ultra accessory connector for devices in Apple's made for iPhone certification program.
The ultra accessory connector or UAC would be an 8-pin connector that's a little thinner than USB-C.
People read that to mean Apple is coming up with yet another proprietary connector and perhaps Apple would replace Lightning or USB-C ports already.
So we reached out to Apple to find out what exactly is going on.
Apple told CNET that this new connector was not new at all and has been around for years.
You may have seen it on certain Nikon cameras.
The Ultra Accessory Connector name is actually the new thing.
BoxLink called it UC-E6.
While another company called it the ultra mini connector.
To boil it down, the news is Apple will support devices like a Lightning to UAC or USBA to USBC adapter.
Yeah that's not as horrifying right?
