Is an iPhone with a curved OLED screen on the way?
Reports say the tech giant is asking its Asia suppliers for increased production of OLED screens.
Next year could bring a new iPhone with a curved OLED screen, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday. The reason behind the prediction: Apple's Asia suppliers say the tech giant has asked for higher numbers of thin, organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays.
Apple is considering this model among more than 10 other prototypes so a curved OLED screen is not a sure thing, according to the same sources. However, an OLED screen could be the company's attempt to reverse diminishing sales as the iPhone gets set to mark its 10th anniversary next year.
LED screens currently dominate the smartphone market. But, as with televisions, OLED is on the rise, most prominently with the recently released Google Pixel phone. Such screens mean higher image quality and thinner phone bodies because they don't require back lights.
Apple did not immediately return CNET's request for comment.
