The day of the desktop hard drive would appear to be over -- at least for terabyte-size drives. Now, for about the same money, you can get a smaller, USB-powered model that's just as fast and way more travel-friendly.

To wit: For a limited time, and while supplies last, Newegg has the Toshiba Canvio Connect 1TB portable hard drive for $59.99 shipped. That's after applying coupon code EMCPWWP25 at checkout. (If you're not already a signed-in Newegg newsletter subscriber, you'll need to be.)

That's a full $40 off the regular price of this drive, which is available in five glossy colors -- but, alas, the discount code applies only to the black one. (You can get the red or white one for $69.99, still a $30 savings.)

The Canvio weighs less than 6 ounces and measures a trim 4.4 inches by 3.1 inches by 0.6 inch. Like most drives of its type, it draws power from your PC's USB port. Just make sure you don't lose the USB cable. (Why don't all drive manufacturers add a groove or clip or something for storing that cable? Very few do. My advice: keep a rubber band wrapped around the drive and slip the cord in when not in use.)

Toshiba preloads NTI Backup Now EZ for on-the-go backups and Pogoplug for turning the drive into an Internet- and mobile-device-accessible file server; it also affords 10GB of cloud storage. The latter adds a nice secondary backup option for mission-critical data.

The drive arrives formatted for Windows use, but you can plug it into a Mac (no reformatting required) thanks to included compatibility software.

I actually had the opportunity to test the 1TB Canvio Connect last summer, and came away impressed with its blazing performance and sturdy design. Toshiba's two-year warranty is better than average, though I miss the three-year coverage that was available with some of the company's previous portable drives.

Although this doesn't blow the doors off other hard drive deals I've seen, it's definitely a great buy on a fast, capacious portable drive. If all you need is a terabyte of storage, there's little value in opting for a desktop model. Agree? Disagree? You know what to do.

Bonus deal: Looking for a Bluetooth speaker that's good for campgrounds, beaches, and other outdoor environs? Check this out: For a limited time, and while supplies last, Tanga has the refurbished Jabra Solemate Bluetooth speaker for $69.99, plus $5 for shipping. It sells new for nearly twice the price and has through-the-roof ratings from Amazon customers. The Solemate features a ruggedized rubber base and a sandproof carrying case that can stay on while you listen to your tunes.
