If you think there are never any deals to be had on Apple products, think again: You can save a pretty penny by opting for refurbished gear. In fact, I'm on record as saying that you should go the refurb route for any and all Apple purchases.

See, Apple routinely offers iMacs, iPads, iPods, MacBooks, and other items for less than the price of new. But this refurbished hardware is literally as good as new. Typically you get a new (or at least pristine) outer casing, a new battery (where applicable), and the same one-year warranty afforded full-price products.

If I was in the market for, say, an iPad Mini, I'd have zero qualms about getting a refurbished one. In fact, I've purchased several Apple refurbs over the years, and save for the box, every one was indistinguishable from new.

Ah, but short of checking Apple's Clearance page every single day, how would know when the iPad Mini configuration I wanted was available? Refurbs come and go, often very quickly, and Apple certainly doesn't send notifications.

RefurbMe does. And the company's new RefurbMe app puts Apple-refurb tracking right on your iOS device, the idea being to connect you with deals the moment they're listed.

The app lets you browse the four major product categories, though a pull-out side menu makes it easier to hone in on a specific item (like displays or Apple TV). From there it's a simple matter to see what's currently available for sale (via Apple's online store). And if it's not in stock, you can create an alert.

For example, suppose you're looking for a first-gen iPad Mini. The 16GB Wi-Fi model is available in white for $249 -- a savings of $50 -- but the black model is out of stock. If you tap "Set up an alert," though, the app will push a notification to your iDevice as soon as it becomes available.

This is great stuff, and hugely valuable for the hardcore bargain shopper. But the app has a few issues. There's no "back" option to return to the previous configuration you were viewing. And at least a couple listings had erroneous data, like the iPad Air that showed a full retail price of $11,000.

Nevertheless, RefurbMe is a must-have app for anyone looking to save money on Apple stuff.
