Spotify comes to Canada for free tunes, or ad-free for a few toonies
Canadian music fans can now enjoy the popular music streaming service on their phones, tablets and PCs.
Spotify is now Spotif-eh, as the popular music streaming service launches in Canada today. Canadian music fans can listen to music online and on mobile devices right now, taking Spotify to a total of 58 countries across the globe.
Spotify has a catalogue of over 20 million tracks on offer, including Canadian labels Arts & Crafts, Dine Alone, Nettwerk, Last Gang, Secret City, and Paper Bag, as well as Quebecois labels labels including Audiogram, Bonsound, Dare To Care and Indica. Canadian artists have also been recruited as tastemakers to curate playlists, including Leonard Cohen, Bryan Adams, MAGIC!, Kiesza, Broken Social Scene, Metric, Billy Talent, Bobby Bazini, Celine Dion, Serge Fiori, Les Soeurs Boulay, Daniel Bélanger, and more.
You can listen online, on a desktop app or on your smartphone or tablet for free with adverts in between the songs.
Or you can pay a CA$10 monthly subscription to lose the ads and download playlists to your mobile device for offline listening, so for a few toonies you can enjoy your tunes wherever you are -- even when you're riding deep underground on the Montreal Metro, wandering the Northwest Territories, or venturing any other place you might not get a great signal.
Founded in Sweden in 2006, Spotify now has more than 40 million active users, of which over 10 million pay for the ad-free, mobile service. Other streaming services include Rdio, Apple Radio, Rhapsody and Pandora.
