Android logo caught urinating over Apple logo on Google Maps

Technically Incorrect offers a slightly twisted take on the tech that's taken over our lives.

I awoke this morning to an e-mail from a reader called Siva.

It read: "Can you please search these coordinates on Google Maps and write a blog post on it? 33°30'55.8"N 73°03'40.7"E."

I like to oblige readers -- when they're polite, at least. I was perplexed, though, as to why Siva would want me to write about Google Maps coordinates. Then I saw his headline: "Google Maps Android pissing on Apple."

I went to the said coordinates,which led me to Rawalpindi in Pakistan, and there it was: an Android bot logo cheerily releasing its urine over an Apple logo.

And there it still is, as I write.

I contacted Google to ask what had happened. A company spokeswoman told me: "The vast majority of users who edit our maps provide great contributions, such as mapping places that have never been mapped before, or adding new business openings or address changes. We're sorry for this inappropriate user-created content. We're working to remove it quickly. We also learn from these issues, and we're constantly improving how we detect, prevent and handle bad edits."

Because my mind has been addled by copious years of yearning and disappointment, I also asked the spokeswoman whether this wasn't some waggish Google celebration of the Apple Watch launch. I detected a giggle on the other side of the e-mail.

No, this seems like a rogue individual who believes in witty self-expression. Or, at least, his own version of witty self-expression.

I cannot imagine that Apple will retaliate. Cupertino is too busy making sure that only chi-chi boutiques have Apple Watches today.

Still, if all texts from Android phones fail to appear on iPhones for the next few days, you'll know why.
